Went to retrospective of Bayrle´s work at the MACBA (Museo de arte contemporáneo de Barcelona); the exhibition is called I´ve a feeling we are not in Kansas.

Bayrle is a German artist, not very well known, since most of his work was in the hands of a few private collectors while the rest was boxed and stored by him decades ago, and rescued only for this show (his first retrospective ever). He has meticulous and interesting work in sculpture, film, collage and illustration that dates from the 60s and onward. Alas, what I considered to be the best of it was nowhere to be found on the web, nor can the detail of some of it be properly appreciated. I´ve a feeling we are not in Kansas. I like that.

BARCELONA DIARIES No. 01: TOÑO CAMUÑAS

Obra de Toño Camuñas

Images by Toño Camuñas.

(Ah. Spain, and things in Spain. Finished Tóxico 5 -day workshop and lecture last week at the Instituto Europeo de Diseño of Barcelona, and now, at last, I am hitting the streets. Looking again. And again. I will be posting Spain-related things this week. Starting with these images of Toño Camuñas, a Spanish artist that a friend introduced me to in a Mexican cantina, not too long ago.)

ON THE VERGE OF A CERTAIN MOOD

Images by Diana Kingsley. Via The Exposure blog.

“In my photographs I’m drawn to situations where control is confounded by dysfunction and formal elegance is poised precariously on the verge of the absurd. Subjects are undone by subtle flaws, minor setbacks, or a sense of impending doom: cherished possessions are lost, composure is fleeting, first prize remains elusive, while honorable mentions abound. Although the subject matter varies, a coherent sensibility emerges wherein human frailty and vulnerability are reflected in the most disparate of everyday things. I’m looking for the blunt and unadorned ambience of a one-act comedy, where psychological tension and pratfalls set a mood rather than force any particular narrative.”

TÓXICO WORKSHOP AND LECTURE AT INSTITUTO EUROPEO DEL DISEÑO, BARCELONA

IED DESIGN

Arriving in Barcelona. In one of those weird states of absurd happiness from both extreme jet-lag and giddy other-placeness, everything slightly (nicely) unhinged.

The Tóxico Workshop goes on for all of next week and, in brief, will be about multidisciplinary and slightly intoxicated creative processes. The lecture will be about our  projects, plus the ideas and beliefs that move us. This last one is open to the general public: do come by if you are in town.

One of Beijing’s new landmarks, the OMA desinged Cultural Centre of the CCTV complex, was burnt down due to a fireworks show that went wrong. The building was to be inagurated in May and hosted an hotel plus theaters and other cultural and recreational spaces.

AS TIME GOES BY

The automated Chrono-Shredder calendar, by Susanna Hertrich.

“The Chrono-Shredder represents the passing of time by shredding the days of the year at a slow constant rate. To shred one day takes 24 hours. There is no “off”-button. As the seconds pass by, the tattered remains of the past pile up under the calendar.”

ALBINOS OF LONG AGO

“People born with the genetic condition albinism i.e. a deficiency of the skin, hair and eye pigment melanin, have been the subjects of public curiosity over the centuries. They have been purported to have all sorts of supernatural powers such as mind reading and they were at times even suspected of witchcraft.  Entrapeneurs such as Phineas Barnum employed “albinos” to appear in his American Museum and as part of his travelling sideshow, such as the Lucasie family from Holland and the Martin sisters.   This site shows a variety of American images which date from the 1870s – 1890s” (More here.)

LA SUPERFICIE DE LA TIERRA

hot air balloon designhot air balloon design

(“Our earthly home is everything below the frigid and uninhabitable realm of outer space, and so in a sense we have always lived below the surface of the planet, in a closed, finite environment.”)

THIS IS 7 YEARS AGO

7-years-film2

These rolls of film were shot by me in 2001, during a six-month trip around the world. I have kept them in a small carton box for more than seven years. The seven-year mark is no coincidence: it is said that it takes precisely that long for a body to completely regenerate. And so, in fact, not a single cell of the now-me was part of the then-me: nor, hence, part of the original experience. (“J’ est une autre.”)

I never forgot that the films were there in their carton box. But nowadays, hard as I try, I find it difficult to remember even one of the actual photographs I might have taken back then. The images themselves–locked up in the undeveloped film–have purposefully been left to weather, time, chance: a process probably more faithful to what happens with the moments themselves; to the memories locked up in our (sometimes humid, sometimes dusty) brain.

So. To go. To click. To age. To fade. To wait. And wait. And wait, and wait until seven years is finally past: yesterday I dropped off the first four films to be developed.

We shall see.

Or not.

(Maybe a double ghost of an almost remembering, like the dream of an I once was.)
