Says BibliOdyssey:

“Ulissi Aldrovandi (Aldrovandus) (1522-1605) graduated from Padua and Bologna Universities with degrees in law, philosophy and medicine and taught logic to supplement the occasional patronage bestowed on him by his cousin, the Pope.

During nearly a year of confinement in Rome while fighting a heresy charge, Aldrovandi developed a strong interest in the natural world. He began to collect all manner of specimens which apparently came to constitute a formidable natural history museum for those that visited him.

He travelled quite a bit in his quest for specimens and recorded his observations in some 4000 manuscripts, a number of which were published during his lifetime. His writings include studies in ornithology, medicine, hydrology, zoology, botany and a paper on mythical creatures as well (among others).

Aldrovandi was instrumental in establishing the botanical gardens in Bologna and his alma mater there awarded him the first Professorial chair in natural science.”

EE CUMMINGS DIXIT

.

“am i separated from your body smile brain hands merely
to become the jumping puppets of a dream? oh i mean:
entirely having in my careful how
careful arms created this at length
inexcusable, this inexplicable pleasure-you go from several
persons: believe me that strangers arrive
when i have kissed you into a memory
slowly, oh seriously
-that since and if you disappear

solemnly
myselves
ask “life, the question how do i drink dream smile

and how do i prefer this face to another and
why do i weep eat sleep-what does the whole intend”
they wonder. oh and they cry “to be, being, that i am alive
this absurd fraction in its lowest terms
with everything cancelled
but shadows
-what does it all come down to? love? Love
if you like and i like, for the reason that i
hate people and lean out of this window is love, love
and the reason that i laugh and breathe is oh love and the reason
that i do not fall into this street is love.”

TÓXICO PROJECT RESEARCH No. 036: BONDING IMAGINATION TO STORY

Michael Haneke interviewed by Alexander Kluge.

“In general one ought to work with the spectator’s imagination. In juxtaposition to literature, film steals the spectator’s images. While reading images are produced mentally, film robs the imagination.  One ought to work against this whenever possible. And naturally everything that happens outside of the frame can simulate the imagination more than what can be seen. That can be the principle for making a film. What is essential in a film or in a book occurs between the lines.  Suspense, so to speak, resides between the images. The film does not end in the screen, but rather in the spectator’s head or heart or wherever. Omission is a major engine for fantasy. It’s practically a coercion to intervene by means of the imagination. This bonds the spectator closer to the story.”
