How they’re innovating: Since landing on the Web like a UFO in 2003, the Gallic La Blogotheque and its progeny “The Take-Away Shows” have now become a reference for underground music insiders that get about 8,000 hits per day.
Created by journalist Christophe Abric (aka Chryde), La Blogotheque really took off with the launch of “The Take-Away Shows” in 2006. Helmed by film school grad Mathieu Saura (aka Vincent Moon), the independent podcast broke the mold of traditional musicvideo clips by shining a light on emerging bands and de-contextualizing them — having them perform unplugged versions of songs in incongruous locations and shooting them in long, single takes.
“These shows are very intimate, low-fly shots with poetic and organic camera work,” says Philip Rogosky, a British TV commercial producer based in Italy. “They capture these beautiful, serendipitous musical moments, and they’re giving them away.”
Some highlights of the shows include the Arcade Fire performing in a Parisian elevator, Vampire Weekend in a tour bus and Beirut streets and Grizzly Bear singing “Knife” while walking down rue de Charonne in Paris.
“They’re way ahead of rock mags and even music labels,” explains David Carzon, a journalist for daily French newspaper 20 minutes. “With ‘Take-Away Show,’ they’ve given exposure to indie bands like Clap Your Hands Say Yeah that we would have never heard about.”
Moon is now launching his own website, TemporaryAreas.com, which will feature video clips of musical celebrations around the globe. Meanwhile, Chryde says he will carry on the legacy of the Blogotheque in its original MP3 format and intends to keep it financially independent.
Take: Moon says his camera work is inspired by his love for rhythm. “Since I’ve worked a lot on film editing, I always try and capture a sense of rhythm when I tell stories. That’s why when I’m shooting a song, I like to move the camera around. Some think I’m crazy, but it’s my way of relating to music.”
